Republic Act No. 10175 or the “Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012”.

As technology arises, the internet was made. The internet that has been introducing us to a lot of things; to social media, mobile games, and many more various applications which allowed us to learn, communicate, find entertainment, enjoy, and discover a lot of things. But of course, it is not always fun, there is always a negative side.

Cybercrime. Cybercrime is on the negative of the internet world, it is done by using the internet to offend, threaten, scam, spread personal or fake informations, hack, and blackmail a person or a company. According to sources, cybercrime could cause financial losses, stealing of identity, stealing of intellectual properties, and loss of confidence and trust.

People started taking advantage of the internet and is now used for crimes. How scary, the internet which made a lot of us enjoy and smile is now being used for crimes.

'FAILON NGAYON':CYBERCRIME CASES IN THE PHILIPPINES

Last March 2017, Camille Arogona, an assistant director, became a victim of an identity theft. Her identity was used to scam people. And so of course, the victims messaged her about "what she did" and they kept telling her to give back their money or they will report her to the police. Camille was very clueless about what's happening that time not until she saw her pictures posted in social media labeled as a "scammer".

According to the police, in 2016, over one thousand and nine hundred thirty-seven (1,937) cybercrime cases were recorded. It is said that a lot of people still commit cybercrimes since it is just easy for them to escape or run away.

That being a reason, Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez made the House Bill 5021 or the "Social Media Regulation Act of 2017" which will make the identity verification on social media more intense and specific to prevent people from using other's identity.

Republic Act No. 10175 or the “Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012”.

AN ACT DEFINING CYBERCRIME, PROVIDING FOR THE PREVENTION, INVESTIGATION, SUPPRESSION AND THE IMPOSITION OF PENALTIES THEREFOR AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES

This Act shall prevent people from committing crimes in the internet world, secure the safety of everyone's property,  protect everybody's personal information or identity, and make the internet world a safe place for everyone.

Just the fact that the congress had to make another bill concerning cybercrime just to make sure that these offenders won't be able to run away again,  just shows how worse cybercrime is, here in the Philippines. That is why we have to be more careful with our posts especially with our personal informations. The internet world is getting more and more dangerous, day by day.

And also, just a reminder: Where ever or how ever a crime is done, it is still a crime. A crime is a crime; and so does a law is a law.
